PERSUASION AS PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT
“HOW CAN I CONVINCE YOU?”

CRIT-THINK ACTIVITY
1.What are your means of transportation when 
travelling by land here in the Philippines? List all 
you can. Share 1 positive and 1 negative experience 
when you rode some means of transport?
2.A classmate comes to you and accuses you of 
stealing her money. How would you defend 
yourself? Assuming some of her arguments are 
right.

persuasion
the process of getting someone to believe on something or do something by convincing him that it is the logical and reasonable thing to do.
Argumentation makes use of:
                 1.  logos   2. pathos      and    3. ethos.

logos – appealing to the audience logic/reasoning system.
example: classroom air-conditioning IS A MUST.

Pathos appealing to the audience’s emotions.
   Example argument:   Removing death
 sentence from the law.

Ethos – appeal to credibility/CHARACTER.
Having ethos means that as a source of info you are credible, reputable, and respectable.
Ex. A reporter has the right to report.

Three types of audience
1.supportive audience – spectators who are already briefed on the issue at hand.
  Logos = not much needed
  pathos = must be maximize
2.wavering audience – spectators who are not readily accepting your ideas.
      > Use logos to win their support
      > build up ethos
3.hostile audience – most difficult to please and win. Make no mistake to your claims.
  > Lessen the use of pathos
  > stick to your logos

Read the Phase Out the Obsolete Jeepney (an excerpt) by Neal H. Cruz and answer the following questions -worksheet.
Vocabulary check
1.Phase-out -  to discontinue the practice, production, or use of by phases
2.Obsolete – outdated, old-fashioned.

4.WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVE MEANS OF COMMUTING THAT THE AUTHOR PROPOSES?
5.WHAT IS THE ISSUE BEING TACKLED IN THE ARTICLE?
6.WHAT IS THE AUTHOR’S THESIS STATEMENT (MAIN STANCE/belief) ON THE ISSUE?
7.WHAT ARE HIS ARGUMENTS (explanations/EXAMPLES/ EVIDENCES) TO SUPPORT HIS THESIS?
8.WHICH TYPE OF AUDIENCE DO YOU THINK IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE OF THIS ARTICLE? WHY SO?

EVALUATION:
“A” if you agree or  “D” if you don’t. Whatever your answer may be, explain briefly.
1. argumentation and persuasion should always be used together for your arguments to be maximally effective.
2. When dealing with a supportive audience, pathos is always the most effective appeal that you can use.
3. It is never a good idea to use pathos with a hostile audience.
4. The more arguments you have to support a claim, the better chances that your claim will be accepted or believed in. inversely, the less arguments you have, the less chances you are to be accepted and/or believed in.
