ETECH LESSON 7-10 LECTURE NOTES

Lesson 7
Online Platforms for ICT Content Development
• Nature and purposes of online platforms  • Web applications for content development

Online Platforms for ICT Content Development
Ø  Social Media Platforms. Websites like Facebook allow you to create not only personal accounts but also pages and groups where you can share content.
Ø  Blogging Platforms. It typically looks like a newsletter where you are given options to change the design to your liking. Though you can manipulate the design, social media platform’s popularity is still unrivaled.
Content Management System
Ø  A Content Management System (CMS) is a computer application (sometimes online or browser-based) that allows you to publish, edit and manipulate, organize and delete web content. CMS is used in blogs, news websites, and shopping.

Lesson 8
Basic Web Page Creation
• Web page creation using templates  • Web page design using an online WYSIWYG platform

WYSIWYG
Ø  WYSIWYG is the acronym for What You See Is What You Get. This means that whatever you type, insert, draw, place, rearrange, and everything you do on a page is what the audience will see.
Creating a Website using Microsoft Word
  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Type anything on the page like “Welcome to my Website.”
  3. Click on File > Save As > Browse.
  1. On the Save As dialog box, locate your activities folder and create a new folder named “Sample Webpage.”
  2. Specify the filename “Sample Webpage.”
  3. On the Save As type, select “Web Page (*.htm; *.html).”
  1. Click the Change Title button.
  1. Input the title as seen below, then click OK then Save.
9. Check the files on your Sample WebPage folder. You will see a new folder generated including your htm/html file.
10. Open the Sample WebPage.htm file and you will see that you just created a webpage using MS Word.

Lesson 9
Collaborative ICT Development
• Team structure and dynamics for ICT Content
• Online collaborative tools and processes

Web Portals
Ø  A web portal is a website that contains information from different sources and places them in one location in a uniform way.

Online Collaborative Tools
Working together does not necessarily mean you have to be physically together. These tools can help your group “go the distance” and work as if you already have your own office.

An example of a web portal is Yahoo! (www.yahoo. com). Yahoo.com offers a web portal where news, email, weather, etc. are found in one page.

There are plenty of online collaborative tools:
1. You can use Facebook groups to create a group page that will allow people in your group to communicate your ideas.
2. WordPress also allows you to multiple contributors for a single blog.
3. Google Drive and Microsoft Office Online allow multiple people to work on different office files and even have their own group’s cloud storage.
4. Microsoft’s Yammer offers companies to have their own social network that allows sharing and managing content.
5. Sites like Trello offer an online to-do checklist for your entire team.

Lesson 10. Web Publishing
Web Page - A single, usually hypertext document on the World Wide Web that can incorporate text, graphics, sounds, etc.
A Uniform Resource Locator, abbreviated URL, also known as  web address, is a specific character string that constitutes a  reference to a resource.
In most web browsers, the URL of a web page is displayed on  top inside an address bar. An example of a typical URL would be "http://en.example.org
Web Site
Ø  A connected group of pages on the World Wide Web regarded as a single entity, usually maintained by one person or organization and devoted to a single topic or several closely related topics.
Ø  A set of interconnected webpages, usually including a homepage, generally located on the same server, and prepared and maintained as a collection of information by a person, group, or organization.
Web server
Ø  A remote computer or a computer program that delivers Web pages to a user's computer, or a client, upon request from a web browser through the Internet
Ø  The most common use of web servers is  to host websites, but there are other uses  such as gaming, data storage or running  enterprise applications
-          Web     Server  S/W     –          Apache, Tomcat, Internet Information Service (IIS) etc.

Web browser
Ø  Its primary function is to deliver web  pages on the request to clients using the Hypertext  Transfer Protocol (HTTP). This means delivery of HTML  documents and any additional content that may be  included by a document, such as images, style sheets and  scripts.
Ø  A user agent, commonly a web browser or web crawler,  initiates communication by making a request for a specific  resource using HTTP and the server responds with the  content of that resource or an error message if unable to  do so.
Ø  While the primary function is to serve content, a full implementation of HTTP also includes ways of receiving content from clients. This feature is used for submitting  web forms, including uploading of files.
Web Publishing
Ø  Web publishing, or "online publishing," is the process of publishing content (information) on the Internet.
Ø  It includes creating and uploading websites, updating webpages, and posting blogs online.
Ø  The published content may include text, images, videos, and other types of media.
Ø  A Web site is a collection of HTML pageswith the home page typically named INDEX.HTML

***In order to publish content on the web, you need your Gmail + the three things:
1.      web development software
2.      an Internet connection
3.      web server

Ø  The software may be a professional web design program like Dreamweaver or a simple web-based interface like WordPress.
Ø  The Internet connection serves as the medium for uploading the content to the web server.
Ø  Large sites may use a dedicated web host, but many smaller sites often reside on shared servers, which host multiple websites.
Ø  Distributing the site requires copying the resulting HTML pages and the appropriate graphic elements into directories on the server.
Ø  The audience is limitless since content posted on the web can be viewed by anyone in the world with an Internet connection.
Ø  These advantages of web publishing have led to a new era of personal publishing that was not possible before.
Ø  Posting updates on social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter is generally not considered web publishing.
Ø  Instead, web publishing generally refers to uploading content to unique websites

Web Publisher
-          A person or company that uploads, creates, or edits content on Web pages; one who maintains or manages a Web site.
-          A software program or application used to create Web pages.  http://www.interspire.com/websitepublisher

Web Hosting
Web hosting is where your website (or blog) actually sits, on a computer, in a building somewhere, when you put it on the internet.
It doesn't matter where in the world you're located, or where your web hosting is located.
Web hosting is the only thing you have to pay for, to set up a website. Everything else can be done for free
Requirements
Sign up for website hosting
Hosting Service Provider
Choose a domain name (URL)
*.com, *.net, *.in, *.org, *.biz etc.
Create your website and upload
FTP software

Domain Name
-          A domain name is the internet address of a website or blog (URL)
You'll need to choose a domain name of your choice.
Domain names are          unique.  You   can only register a domain name that no one else has taken.
Most good, short names were taken years ago. If the name you want is taken, try adding a descriptive word to the end.
Ø  For       example,          foresttrail.com will      definitely         be        taken,  but foresttrailtales.com probably won't be.
How to check     if a domain name exists?
All           the         Domain Hosting Service providers             offer      this         service free!

Every time you register a domain name, the details of that domain registration must be published in a publicly accessible database called Whois.

Upload Process

FTP Software standard network protocol used to transfer files between computers on a network.
-
File
-          Transfer
-          Protocol
Ø      Cute FTP
Ø      FileZilla
Ø      SmartFTP

Choosing Web Hosting Provider
Choosing a web hosting provider is not easy. There's a huge number of very similar web hosts out there, and 99% of the information about them is bogus.
Do your own research into web hosting.
Whether they say so or not, all sites that recommend web hosting receive payment from the web hosting company, for the promotion of their product.
