TYPES OF SPEECH STYLE
SPEECH STYLE
- The unique way of delivering information to the audience. from a speaker.
1. INTIMATE
Ø communication/conversation between persons of close alliance
Ø also known as the bedroom language
Ø married couples
Ø lovers
Ø family members
2. CASUAL/INFORMAL
Ø natural conversations/
Øconversational mood (phone texts, personal calls)
Ø colleagues
Ø peers
ØFriends
ØAcquaintance
3. CONSULTATIVE
Ø conversational but does not use colloquial terms
Ø communication between a superior and a subordinate, doctor & patient, lawyer & client, lawyer & judge, teacher & student, counselor & client.
ØThis speech style uses feedback and listener participation.
4. FORMAL
Ø used in formal settings and is one-way in nature
Ø is usually impersonal and formal
i.e.: sermons, rhetorical statements and questions, speeches, pronouncements made by judges, announcements
5. FROZEN
Øcommunications RARELY or NEVER changes, used generally in a very formal ceremony/setting.
üthe Pledge of Allegiance, the Lord’s Prayer, the Preamble to the US Constitution, the Alma Mater, a bibliographic reference, laws, bible.
üThis is a style for declamation and for print.
Joo’s styles are ranked in terms of the relationship between speaker (or writer) and listener (or reader) on a level of formality, from the most formal to the least formal style:
(a) frozen style- like a cold form of communication meant to discourage someone from participating.
(b) formal style- for instance, a speech in an official setting.
(c) consultative style- with “a conversation between strangers” as example.
(d) casual style- such as a conversation between friends.
(e) intimate style- such as a private conversation between two persons who know each other extremely well.
