TYPES OF SPEECH

ACTS

1. Locutionary
Ø an actual act of uttering (the line). The act opens the communication process.
Ø
ØEx. “Please do the dishes.”

2. Illocutionary
Ø the social function/intention of what is said.
Ø
ØBy uttering the locution “Please do the dishes,” the speaker requests the addressee to wash the dishes.
TYPES OF
ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS - CCAD
uConstatives: affirming, announcing, answering, confirming. “we find the defendant guilty”
uCommissives: agreeing, inviting, offering, promising. “I promise to call you tonight”
uAcknowledgments: apologizing, congratulating, thanking.
uDirectives: advising, asking, forbidding, ordering, permitting. “would you make some tea, please?”

3. Perlocutionary
Øthe effect of what is said to the person it is uttered to.
Ø
ØEx. “Please do the dishes” would lead the addressee washing the dishes.

IN GENERAL:
uLOCUTION – UTTERANCE
uILLOCUTION – INTENTION : ASK, REQUEST, INSULT
uPERLOCUTION – RESPONSE: GIVE, APPROVE, SHOUT
